Perinton Volunteer Ambulance Corps was founded on April 30, 1965 and began service on September 1, 1965 as a part time, volunteer, basic life support (BLS) service for the approximately 18,000 residents of the Village of Fairport and the Town of Perinton. The first coverage was only weekends, with evening hours being added before the end of the year. By the late 1970s, PVAC began filling shifts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Consistently for over twenty years, we were the only all-volunteer ambulance corps with 100% crew coverage in western New York.
In 2014, our staff of approximately 100 Dispatchers and EMTs received nearly 4,200 requests for service. We operate a fleet of four ambulances, a first response vehicle, and incident support trailer out of our headquarters at 1400 Turk Hill Road, adjacent to the Town Hall. Every day, we have two full crews on duty around the clock and staff an additional ambulance during high volume hours. The remaining vehicles are staffed when the needs of the community dictate.
Beyond emergency response, our Corps offers several add-on services to the community: A loan cupboard stocked with walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, and canes, free blood pressure checks to anyone who stops in, and File of Life emergency information cards (available at our quarters, events we staff, and certain pharmacies around town). Additionally, we sponsor an Explorer Post through the Boy Scouts of America and provide scholarships to high school seniors who are pursuing health-related studies in college.
Last, but certainly not least, we sponsor CPR and First Aid training to Fairport High School students through a local American Heart Association training center; to date over 2,600 students have been trained through this program. We also sponsor free CPR training for residents of Fairport and Perinton; please call us at (585) 223-4150 to learn more about the next class!
